  1. “Galeda” is when you are in the lilacs on a snowy day and somebody behind or in front of you shakes the branches and snow (or on a rainy day, rain) tumbles down on you, going down your neck and making you cold! I don’t remember who started (came up with) that name, but I still have it come to mind when I am out by the orange tree and bump a branch and dew drops off!
Phonetically it suppose it would be “gah-lee-dah’ “

Ah well…I still like this site…and the new “look”!
I wonder if the daffodils are coming up as abundantly as they used to ! And if there are any on the hillside by Route 14! No daffodils here (‘cept in pots) due to the warmer than New England temps. No lilacs or “Forsith” either!

  8. Herein is given the explanation of the roots of a bizarre ritual involving tree branches. Long ago in the mid to late 1980’s I watched an episode of “Sesame Street” (I’m 98% sure it was at Mem and Pep’s; the other possibility being that it was at the Harkins’ or Smith’s). In one cultural segment, the puppets capered around single-file, singing a lilting song with a 3-syllable Spanish word or phrase as the chorus, swinging maracas around in time (or, because puppetry, the maracas were swinging *them* around. Mind blown). The chorus sounded to me like “Gah-leee-dah”. Whereas lilac stalks grow close together, are vertical and tensile and maracas-esque, they provided the ideal platform for imitating what I had seen, with the added bonus of shaking accumulated rainwater, snow or sleet off the canopy onto whatever sibling availed themselves. And oneself. And it caught on. Ludicrous activity, yet not that ludicrous.
